Experience has value. But its greatest value may be what it allows someone else to avoid learning from the beginning.

Experience Is Expensive
We usually talk about experience as something valuable. We list years of it on résumés, look for it when hiring someone, and rely on it when the answer to a problem is not obvious.
But we rarely talk about what experience costs.
Experience is purchased with time. Sometimes with money. Often with mistakes. Occasionally with failure.
A person who has spent twenty years becoming good at something did not simply accumulate twenty years. During those years they made decisions, watched results, solved problems, misunderstood situations, corrected assumptions, discovered shortcuts, recognized patterns, and learned which shortcuts should never have been taken.
That accumulated understanding is far more valuable than the number of years itself.
But Experience Has a Problem
Much of what people learn disappears.
A project ends. An employee retires. A business closes. A supervisor moves on. A problem gets solved and everyone returns to work.
The result remains, but much of the reasoning that produced it is lost.
The next person eventually encounters a similar problem and begins solving it again.
They make some of the same assumptions. They test some of the same solutions. Sometimes they repeat the same mistakes.
We call this gaining experience.
And individually, it is.
But collectively, something has gone wrong.
Experience Should Compound
The lesson learned by one person should become part of the starting knowledge available to the next.
What Compounding Experience Looks Like
Imagine two crews performing the same type of work.
The first crew encounters a recurring problem. They spend hours diagnosing it, try several approaches, discover the underlying cause, and eventually develop a reliable solution.
Six months later, another crew encounters the same problem.
If the first crew’s knowledge disappeared with the completed job, the second crew starts near zero.
If the lesson was captured well, the second crew starts somewhere else entirely.
They may know what symptoms to look for. They may know which assumptions proved wrong. They may understand which tests revealed the cause and which attempted solutions wasted time.
They still have to think.
The new situation may not be identical. The previous solution may not apply. New evidence may even prove that part of the original lesson was wrong.
But the second crew no longer has to begin where the first crew began.
That is compounding.
Capturing an Answer Is Not Enough
There is an important distinction between preserving an answer and preserving knowledge.
An answer might say:
Do it this way.
Knowledge should tell us more.
Why did that approach work? What evidence supported the decision? What other approaches were considered? What assumptions were made? Under what conditions does the lesson apply? What would cause us to reconsider it?
Without that context, yesterday’s good answer can easily become tomorrow’s bad rule.
Preserving reasoning gives the next person something much more useful than an instruction. It gives them a better place from which to think.
This Applies Far Beyond Work
The same principle appears almost everywhere.
A parent learns something that makes a difficult decision easier for their child. A business documents why a process failed so the next team does not repeat it. A tradesperson teaches an apprentice how to recognize a problem before it becomes expensive. A leader explains not only what decision was made, but what factors shaped it.
In each case, experience crosses a boundary between people.
The person receiving that knowledge will still develop experience of their own. They will make different mistakes, encounter different circumstances, and hopefully discover things the previous person never knew.
That is exactly the point.
If they do not have to spend their time relearning everything we already learned, they can spend more of it discovering what comes next.
A Question Worth Asking
What have you learned that someone else may eventually have to learn again?
And what would it take to leave them a better starting point?
Moving the Starting Line
Progress does not require the next person to know everything we know.
It requires us to leave behind enough useful understanding that they do not have to begin from the same place.
Then they can test what we learned. Improve it. Correct it. Add what their own experience teaches and pass something better forward again.
Over time, individual experience becomes accumulated knowledge.
And accumulated knowledge moves the starting line forward.
